Member Spotlight: Angel DeFazio How and when did you learn that you had MCS?
I was diagnosed with Toxic Encephalopathy. I learned about it in May of 1997, after being exposed to formaldehyde in the cadaver lab at SW College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, AZ in 1996. Then I had short term ozone related pulmonary problems from the ozone generator given to me at the school, which was intended to remove and clear the fragrance. |

Gene Variants in Chemical Sensitivity
Three recent studies show that a genetic variant makes sufferers of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) more likely to develop the condition. In 2004, McKeown-Eyssen studied 203 MCS sufferers and 162 controls and found that genetic differences relating to detoxification processes were present more often in those with MCS than those without. The study concluded that "a genetic predisposition for MCS may involve altered biotransformation of environmental chemicals. |

A 2006 study at the University of Colorado and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston concluded that air-freshening chemicals may lead to the formation of cancerous cells by suppression of the enzymes that are essential for regulating normal cell death (Air-freshening chemicals may lead to cancerous cells, 2006). The presence of these toxicants in the community puts people at risk of developing asthma, cancer, and chemical sensitivities (CS). Air fresheners and plug-ins don't actually freshen the air or eliminate odors. |

Illnesses You Have to Fight to Get
No one wants to be sick. Now imagine having to fight to prove you really are sick! A study by Joseph Dumit, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Science & Technology Studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was published in Social Sciences and Medicine entitled Illnesses You Have to Fight to Get: Facts as Forces in Uncertain Emergent Illnesses (Dumit, 2006). |

Fragrance Free Soap Search - Part 2 Shampoo and conditioners
Why is shampoo included in a soap search? Because all the really safe, fragrance free shampoos that I have found are actually soap. I realize our society has gotten used to using detergent based shampoos these days, so it may sound a bit strange to use soap on your hair, but think about it. Detergents were virtually unheard of before the World War era... |

Last week I received an interesting phone call. It was in response to a letter to the editor I wrote concerning real estate and the use of Glade Plug-ins, Bounce and Fragrances. |

Part 2 of a 3 part series: After the shock of the social worker’s report which was full of falsification, deletions, and hearsay, another unbelievable document arrived stating that I was on a national Child Abuse Index. There was no trial and no evidence, other than hearsay from one person who met with me for approximately 15 minutes. This was the sole reason for convicting me? I looked at the document in disbelief. How could this organization usurp my Constitutional due process rights? |

The Name Game
A distinct controversy is currently raging in the MCS community. Or, is it MCS? Some call it TI, some call it CS, and some call it CI, TILT, TE, IEI, or other names. There are legal, ethical, scientific, and other complications to each name choice. Was there ever a condition that went by so many names?
