Mercurialism, Part 1

Mercury is a well known neurotoxin that comes in various forms.  Scientists have learned that all forms of mercury have the potential for toxicity.  The first part of this series will discuss three common sources of mercury - methylmercury, ethylmercury, and mercury vapor.  Discussion will include history, sources, disposition kinetics, and the effects/relative toxicity of exposure to each form.  Next month, in part two, we will examine the various types of tests for mercury poisoning, the advantages and disadvantages of each method, and how to interpret the results.  Finally, in part three, we will discuss treatment modalities for mercury toxicity.

Member Spotlight:  Julie Genser

An interview of MCS America member and founder of PlanetThrive.com, Julie Genser, by Deborah Howery.

1) How long have you had MCS & how were you diagnosed?

I first became aware I had MCS in September 2004 during a nightmare that unfolded in Washington state and Arizona. Local conditions of mold, pollen, daily controlled forest fire burnings, and pesticides brought on severe MCS, and along with it, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Did You Say Exercise?

Yup, I said exercise!  Before we go any further, don’t begin an exercise program without checking with your doctor first!  Let’s play it safe. Exercise is not for everyone.  Certainly if you have chronic fatigue or certain other health conditions it should be taken slowly and may even be contraindicated.   That’s for you and your doctor to decide.  So please check with a doctor first.

Scientific Studies: Do Litigants Malinger?

The year in research began on a sour note with a study that appeared in The Journal of Psychosomatic Research entitled “MMPI-2 validity, clinical and content scales, and the Fake Bad Scale for personal injury litigants claiming idiopathic environmental intolerance (IEI)” (Staudenmayer & Phillips, 2007).  The journal name says it all.

Starting a Support Group

When my husband and I moved to a new town I was faced with the task of building a new support network.  This can be tricky at the best of times, but I was even more challenged by the limitations imposed by my MCS.  I found that on line support groups were a big help, but eventually decided that I really needed someone “on the ground” who could relate to what I was going through.  So I decided to start a support group.

The Low Down On Air Fresheners

Most MCSers know that air fresheners are bad for our health.  However, few give us the time of day when it comes to alternatives to air fresheners to make public places accessible.  A 2006 study at the University of Colorado and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston concluded that air-freshening chemicals may lead to the formation of cancerous cells by suppression of the enzymes that are essential for regulating normal cell death (Air-freshening chemicals may lead to cancerous cells, 2006).

Indigo Canary

I could continue the saga of the Indigo Canary as previously planned, addressing the emotions of rage and disbelief that only a parent could experience with an MCS child, but I need to let that part of my life go for now.  Anyone who has or is raising an MCS child should know how I feel and they are welcome to contact me anytime for support and understanding of their circumstances.  I regret that at this time I have to re-arrange my priorities and focus on the wellness of my child as he has developed further complications.

Sal’s Place

The grass is always greener on the other side.  Or so they say.  Is it true?  It does seem to be.  One of the most common statements made to me is how lucky I am to live in Hawaii.  Unfortunately, I see it vastly different - even blaming the Hawaii environment for triggering my MCS.  Let’s take a look at an subjective view of my home, the island of Maui.  Well, hopefully it will be objective!

Inside MCS America

Most of you already know we’ve been busy at MCSA over the past month working hard at a letter which has just been mailed to the American Medical Association (AMA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and carbon copied to the World Health Organization (WHO).
